How a Senior Might Recover Better with Home Care
The moment an aging senior faces a medical emergency that might land him or her in the hospital, their family — their loved ones — rally around them. This may not happen all the time, but in most situations, those seniors who might have suffered a heart attack, stroke, aneurysm, injuries sustained in a slip and fall accident, or something else will often find that their adult children, grandchildren, siblings, spouse, and others are right there by their side. Professional home care may be the better option or at least one that can supplement family support during this recovery process.
When they return home, they may face a long and difficult recovery process. They may be told the odds of returning to 100% are minimal, but there is still a lot they can do to help gain strength, improve balance, and help take care of themselves in the future.
The recovery process could take months or even years. Often, during these difficult times of life, family members do their best to support their aging loved ones. They might give up certain hobbies, spending time with friends, or even their jobs to become primary caregivers.
In reality, though, most “family caregivers” don’t have any experience doing this for an aging senior. Without experience, too many things can be missed. Without experience, a lot of mistakes can happen. No one is going to love this aging senior more than family, but that doesn’t mean family is the best at helping them recover.
Below are a few ways that home care may provide a higher level of support for the senior as he or she goes through a long and difficult recovery process.
1. Experience.
You can’t underestimate the value of experience in helping seniors recover from major medical emergencies or injuries. Even though a younger family member like an adult child, has all the care and concern in the world for that individual, unless he or she is trained in helping elderly men and women do exercises, take the right steps to improve safety at home, and so forth, they won’t have the same level of experience that a home care agency would offer.
Too many times families will discourage certain exercises or activities out of safety concerns, but with the right experience, a home care aide may just encourage those very things that the senior’s doctor has recommended because they know how best to support that individual while he or she completes them.
2. A healthy diet.
In our day and age of fast food, processed meals, and everyone always seems to be in a hurry, healthy eating has gone by the wayside. Unfortunately, healthy foods and the right balance of nutrition are precisely what people need when their bodies are recovering from major medical crises.
An experienced home care provider would be able to help the senior figure out what he or she needs based on their age, past health issues, and what the doctor recommends, and take the time to assist in preparing those healthy meals with them.
3. A consistency of schedule.
Many family support networks have other responsibilities, like careers, raising children, and more. They aren’t able to be there for the senior when he or she needs it (at least not all the time).
But a professional, experienced home care aide would. That individual would be hired to show up at the same time each day, work with the senior for the same schedule, and even if they are needed in the morning for a couple of hours and then in the late afternoon or evening for a couple of hours, they will have somebody there with them.
That beats waiting around, hoping that somebody is going to stop by to assist with bathing or toileting or preparing meals or getting them out to the store or something else they need at that time to help with the recovery process.
