What Are the Most Common Health Conditions the Elderly Face?
Some people age without ever running into health issues. Others seem to face more than their share. Statistically, the odds of having at least one chronic health condition after the age of 65 is 80%. The National Council on Aging says that 8 out of 10 adults age 65 or older have at least one chronic condition and almost 7 out of 10 have two or more.
If your parents have any of them, a few things need to change. Your parents need to carefully watch their diet. They need to exercise regularly while also avoiding activities their doctor has cautioned against. They may also need to take prescription medications each day.

#1 – High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure, or hypertension, affects more than half of all adults 65 or older. It increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Losing weight, exercising, and reducing sodium intake can help lower blood pressure. Avoiding or easing stress is also beneficial.
If your mom or dad has hypertension, make sure they see their doctor regularly. Keep a sphygmometer at home to check their blood pressure in a relaxed setting. Help them with healthy meals, exercise routines, and medication reminders.
#2 – High Cholesterol
Cholesterol is found in everything from meat to dairy products. Too much in your bloodstream can cause health issues like heart disease. If your parent has high cholesterol, a diet that carefully monitors good and bad fats, increases fiber, and avoids sugar can help. Medications may be necessary. Exercise is a must!
#3 – Arthritis
Arthritis occurs when the cartilage around both bones in a joint wears out. The bones rub together and cause pain and inflammation. Despite the pain, your mom or dad needs to keep active. Over-the-counter pain relievers and hot/cold packs will ease the pain. Someone may need to be there for support while walking outside.
#4 – Heart Disease
According to NCOA, 29% of adults 65 or older have heart disease. Your parents must attend all recommended medical appointments, schedule routine visits, take daily medications, and follow a heart-healthy diet. If your mom or dad’s doctor recommends exercise, ask if there are exceptions. Some very strenuous activities may be limited at first or permanently.
#5 – Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form in older adults. Estimates are that 27% of those 65 or older have diabetes. Diet and exercise are important for avoiding increased blood sugar levels. Your mom or dad’s doctor may prescribe medications if that’s not enough. Your parent will also need to check blood sugar levels throughout the day.
